From the Wikipedia entry on Rhinelander:

The area that eventually became the city of Rhinelander was originally called Pelican Rapids by early settlers for the stretch of rapids just above the convergence of the Wisconsin and Pelican Rivers.

Around 1870, Anderson W. Vaughntraveled up the Wisconsin River in order to cruise timber for Brown’s father, E. D. Brown. Upon arriving at the meeting point of the Wisconsin and Pelican Rivers at the site of John Curran‘s trading post, and seeing the high banks along the rapids and the excellent pine stands, Anderson Brown envisioned a mill town with a lumber mill powered by the waters of the Wisconsin River. Brown’s vision would not come to fruition for some years, however after subsequent expeditions with others including his brother and Rhinelander’s first mayor,Webster Brown, the brothers managed to convince their father and uncle to purchase the land from the federal government and build a town.

In its charter, the city was named Rhinelander after Frederic W. This was part of a bid by the Brown brothers to induce the railroad to extend a spur to the location to further their lumbering business. Ultimately, after over ten years of negotiations, the Brown family agreed to convey half their land holdings in the area to the railroad in exchange for a rail line to their future city. In 1882, the railroad line from present-day Monico to Rhinelander was completed, jump starting the development of Rhinelander as the commercial hub of the region.

Marinette was first settled by a small Algonquin tribe, then became a French fur trading post in the 19th century.

Are you looking for a moving company in Crandon, WI? Frank the Mover is your best choice for moving your household goods across town or across the country!

From the Wikipedia entry on Crandon:

Samuel Shaw, an entrepreneur and capitalist, bought property in the area of Forest County in the 1880s, formerly Oconto County. With the aide of Major Frank P. Crandon, tax commissioner with the Chicago and North Western Transportation Company, he successfully lobbied the Wisconsin Legislature for the creation of Forest County, which was established in 1887. Because of his help, Frank Crandon became the namesake for the county seat. Rail service arrived shortly thereafter in the region via the Soo Line Railroad, but a spur linedid not directly reach the town until the turn of the century.

The lumber industry defined the early growth of the city. In 1891, Page and Landeck Lumber Company purchased a tract of hardwood timberlands near Crandon, and by 1902, the company built a huge sawmill (later named the Keith & Hiles Lumber Mill) near Clear Lake on Crandon’s north side. The population of Crandon grew from 800 to more than 2,400 in just a few years. With the rail line’s presence, settlers and loggers from Kentucky were recruited for the bustling timber industry of northern Wisconsin. The company’s sawmill eventually was moved to Crandon from Glasgow, Kentucky. Modern culture lore reflects the early “Kentuck” ancestors. The city was officially incorporated as Crandon in 1909 after construction of the county courthouse began, and much of the town’s building stock was constructed during this time. Though timber has diminished as a prominent industry in the north-central United States, logging companies still operate in the nearby Nicolet National Forest.

From the 1980s to 2003, Crandon was the center of an environmental debate to construct a mining operation at the proposed Crandon mine, a rich copper deposit discovered by the Exxon Coal and Minerals Company. The heated discussion led to a Wisconsin Legislature mining moratorium act in 1998. Eventually, the proposed company and mine site lands were purchased by the opposed Mole Lake SakaogonChippewa and Forest County Potawatomi tribes, whose reservations sat near the site. The project was withdrawn in October 2003.

On October 7, 2007, Crandon drew the attention of national and world media when Tyler Peterson, an employee of the Forest County Sheriff’s Department and a part-time officer for the Crandon Police Department, shot seven people, wounding one and killing six in the town. They ranged in age from 14 to 20.

The river also provides water for a paper mill, Manistique Papers, which forms a large portion of the local economy. The city’s largest employer is Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital. The economy also depends heavily on tourism. The city is also the first setting of the musical The Christmas Schooner.

Are you looking for a moving company in Menominee, MI? Frank the Mover is your best choice for moving your household goods across town or across the country!

From the Wikipedia entry on Menominee:

Menominee gets its name from a regional Native American tribe known as the Menominee, which roughly translates into “Wild Rice”. The area was originally the home of the Menominee Indian Tribe. They now have a reservation along the Wolf River in North Central Wisconsin.

Menominee gained prominence as a lumber town. In its heyday Menominee produced more lumber than any other city in America. During this time and shortly after, Menominee boasted an opera house. the opera house is now being restored. In the 1910s a cycle car, the “Dudly Bug“, was manufactured in Menominee. In the waning years of lumber production, local business interests, interested in diversifying Menominee’s manufacturing base, attracted to Menominee inventor Marshall Burns Lloyd and his Minneapolis company Lloyd Manufacturing — a manufacturer of wicker baby buggies. In 1917 Lloyd invented an automated process for weaving a man-made wicker and the Lloyd Loom was born — a process still in use today. Today, Menominee relies on manufacturing (paper products, wicker lawn furniture, auto supplies, tourism, etc.) for its economic well-being.

The Menominee Maroons won the state championship in its division for basketball in 1967 and football in 1998, 2006 and 2007.In the 2006 season the Maroons finished unbeaten and only allowed 38 points scored against them but their offense scored 513 point in that entire season . They beat the former Wisconsin and Minnesota Division One state champions. Menominee shares a historic football rivalry with neighbor Marinette, Wisconsin. The two were noted as hosting the oldest interstate high school rivalry in the country and it is now recognized as the third longest rivalry.
